Welcome to the John Stewart Studio and Gallery. I am a California artist, originally from the Los Angeles area. I relocated to Northern California a few years back and love the people and the beautiful scenery up here. My mediums are watercolor, oil, and acrylic along with various drawing techniques. I am a signature member of the National Watercolor Society (NWS) since 1976 and an artist member of the California Art Club since 1993. I was a scenic artist for the entertainment industry for 25 years working for Universal, Disney, Paramount, Warner Bros., and others and officially retired from that in 2000. During that time I also did a lot of free lance illustration, both editorial and for film projects. I've had a few adventures since then including owning a bed & breakfast and gallery in an old Victorian home in Ferndale, CA.
You will notice that this website is a bit sprawling. It was originally put up as one page on the Internet in 1995 and has grown into a 600 page monster. When you click on the menu buttons they sometimes take you to other websites, such as AskArt.com or Shutterpoint.com. This is because that is where a lot of my gallery inventory and photo works are. We are currently working on the site to make it a little easier to navigate.
I am an artist that likes to collect other artist's works and that is where the John Stewart Gallery began. I started with early California artists and then added some old European paintings and drawings. I enjoy the process of buying and selling art and meeting people during these transactions. I have recently been promoting my own work through ads in Plein Air Magazine, which has recently changed it's name to Fine Art Connoisseur. I thought it would be fun to be an emerging artist at the age of sixty five. I enjoy travel and painting what I find at various destinations. Thanks for looking at the work.
