This is a description of "Illuminations" a unique clip art collection
of some very old ornamental art. It ranges in time from ancient to the
middle ages. Some of the art is in 8-bit grey scale and the rest were
scanned in at 24-bit (16 million colors) and then converted to indexed
256 color files. This keeps the largest of these files at about a half
a megabyte in size instead of the many megabytes required for a full blown
24-bit file. Because of the indexed color it is difficult to tell the
difference in the smaller 8-bit files. These are in both Tiff and Jpeg
file formats.
The clip art is very special in that scanning was done directly from rare
old hand-colored prints from the 1800's. Then the files were enhanced
again, by hand, in the computer. Most of the larger colored files are
beautifully detailed and expansive. You will be able to extract smaller
images and portions of images by using a program like PhotoStyler
to create your own art and patterns for use in your desk top publishing
and other art projects.
In the full version of "Illuminations" there are 84 picture files (as of 4/95).
One picture file may have as many as 20 to 50 or more individual illustra-
tions that can be extracted by using a graphics program. This means that
there is the potential for 1000 or more pics.
